Multisignificados* de equação: analisando alguns livros didáticos / Multimeanings of equation: Analyzing some textbooks
On this paper it is discussed how some textbooks address the topic equation. For this discussion, it will be considered different forms “to conceive” and “to treat” this notion, which were based on an epistemological and didactic study developed by the author in a previous work: “Equation and its multimeanings in the teaching of mathematics: contributions of an epistemological study”. Starting from the analyses of some textbooks of different levels of education and different historical epochs we could identify the presence and/or characterization of the multimeanings of equation, namely: intuitive-pragmatic, deductive geometric, structural general, structural setting,
procedural technicist, axiomatic postulation. Amongst the results, it was identified that most of the textbooks analyzed seem to privilege the structural generalist meaning, and none of them look at the deductive-geometric. In the light of this finding, some reflections about the advantages that the approach of multimeanings of equation in the learning environments can bring to the teaching and learning of mathematics are considered.
